Choosing Professional Movers

Choosing a moving company may seem like an overwhelming task. The yellow pages are full of them – how do you choose?  Mention to the mover that you are moving to the Virgin Islands, and things can get interesting. Some of them do not know where the Virgin Islands are, much less how to ship there. Those that do, may charge you a premium because it is considered an International move. Managed Freight has a great system that allows you to select the mover of your choice, without concern for the above fears. We can also select a mover from our network and put them in contact with you to arrange for a site survey. Whether you contact the mover, or it is our referral, we talk with the mover after the survey to get critical information to complete pricing in the move.  Managed Freight is with you in all of your move decisions, providing guidance and avoiding disappointment.

Cost factors

Size: The weight of your move. The more weight, the more cost.
Distance: The number of miles you are travelling between your home state and the port of export.
Time: The time of year you decide to move. Moving during peak times, such as the summer or holidays, means that you'll pay more for your move.

Self-service vs. full-service

A major cost factor when hiring a professional moving company is deciding between a "self-service" and a "full-service" move. In self-service moves, the company transports your belongings from old house to new, but you have to pack and unpack everything at both ends. In a full-service move, the moving company not only transports everything, but also packs and unpacks all your household goods. Most people who hire professional movers choose full-service. Although you could do a self-service move to save money, long-distance moves with lots of heavy, valuable items are best left to the professionals. In addition, cargo insurance for do-it-yourself moves is limited, and covers only damage caused by total loss disasters such as crashes or fire.

Obtain a written cost estimate

Most companies give free estimates, so be sure to ask ahead of time. The estimate is not binding, so the final cost may differ. Factors that might affect the cost of the move include:
  • Packing: Many moving companies will help you pack, but keep in mind that help costs money. If you want to save money, it's best to pack as much as you can on your own, leaving only the hardest tasks for the movers.
  • Staircases: Do you love your new four-story house? Movers won't. Expect additional costs based on the number of staircases they need to use.
  • Pianos: Despite the beautiful music they make, pianos are big, unwieldy objects. Movers typically charge extra for each piano they move.

Moving Your Car

When it comes to shipping your car, there are a few options, and Managed Freight can work with you to determine which is the best option for your situation. Once we take all the factors into account, and determine which are the most important to you, we can make a good decision on the right lane to relocate your vehicle.  It all begins with proper planning and having everything in order prior to delivery of the vehicle to the dock – Managed Freight provides its clients with this peace of mind that all bases are covered and the freight is under control.

Cost
The cost of shipping your vehicle is priced based on size, and the port of departure. Once on island, you will be required to pay a road tax of $.16/Lb. of vehicle weight. Also required is DMV fees and registrations costs. This number varies depending on the weight of the vehicle, but is normally $150.00 - $200.00. If your vehicle’s serial number begins with a 1,4 or a 5 the vehicle is made in the USA and is not dutiable. If it begins with a 2 or 3, the duty rate is 6%. Any other digit is 3.5%  (Above applies for vehicle that are departing from a US port and have been previously licensed in the USA).

Managed Freight can also see to the licensing and registration of the vehicle for you. We can have your vehicle plated and road ready, so you don’t have to.

Our in-Transit insurance provides coverage of your vehicle from door to door, so you do not need to worry about where the damage occurred. The rates are comparable and surveyors are available nationwide, including here in the VI! Insurance and shipping logistics are available through Managed Freight for inbound and outbound vehicle moves.
